Amber Scarab amulet

£150.00

This handsome little Scarab beetle is hand carved from a beautiful piece of Baltic Amber, a delightful egg yolk coloured piece, carved in the traditional style worn in ancient Egypt to bring luck, health and ensure passage to the next life. Stylised on the Dung beetles thatcstill live in North Africa and many other places today, the ancients saw that they often erupted from balls of sun baled dung and the assumption was that they could spawn without the need for parents and could spontaneously cross between the worlds of the living and the dead at will, leading to the belief that they would show the way and guide the dead to the next life and ensure souls could return when they needed to.

Often associated with the sun the scarab was believed to roll the sun over the horizon across the sky and over the horizon again at sun set and ceaselessly do this day after day just as the beetles worked tirelessly to roll away the dung across the sand day after day.

This pendant is approximately 25mm long and hung in a simple hand woven brown rope.
